Hey y'all!
There is no study guide today. Please enjoy two bonus episodes of the podcast featuring two recent graduates of my 1:1 Coaching Program, Recovery Alchemy. I'm officially on a waiting list, but please apply for February/March by clicking here.
Meet Chris:
In this bonus episode of the AfterMeth, Dr. Dallas Bragg interviews Christopher, a 20-year-old student from Connecticut who successfully recovered from crystal meth addiction through Dallas's coaching program. Christopher shares his journey, which began at age 18 when he unknowingly tried crystal meth for the first time. His more serious involvement started at 19 through a Grindr hookup that led to a multi-day binge.
Christopher describes his first experience with crystal meth as finding "what I've been looking for my whole life," providing relief from anxiety, confidence, and sexual disinhibition. However, the consequences were immediate - after his first multi-day use, he ended up in the emergency room nearly experiencing kidney failure. Despite this scary experience, he continued using for about three months, during which he struggled with psychosis, made multiple emergency room visits, and had to confess his addiction to his mother.
The turning point came when Christopher experienced severe auditory hallucinations during a hospital visit, hearing voices that made him fear he would "end up insane or dead." This experience, combined with the recent death of a friend from party drugs, motivated him to seek help.
Through his recovery journey, Christopher developed several coping strategies:
- Playing piano and creating art
- Taking walks in nature
- Avoiding triggers like Grindr in early recovery
- Complete abstinence from all substances initially
- Connecting with others in recovery online
- Building genuine connections with supportive people
Christopher reveals that underlying his addiction were issues with sexuality acceptance, past sexual trauma including grooming by a former boss, and a search for validation and father figures. Through recovery, he has developed a structured life focused on his education (studying to become a PA), volunteer work, and healthy relationships.
The episode concludes with Christopher's advice to others: don't start using meth, get help if you're already using, build a support network, and focus on life goals. He emphasizes that recovery is possible, sharing that he's now reached a point where he doesn't think about using anymore and has developed healthy habits and relationships.
Meet Alex:
In this bonus episode of The AfterMeth, Dallas interviews a successful graduate from his coaching program called Recovery Alchemy. Alex, from Birmingham, England, shares his journey from addiction to recovery. Growing up in a strict, religious household with an authoritative father, Alex struggled with his gay identity from an early age, experiencing deep shame and feelings of inadequacy.
Alex's drug use began in his mid-twenties with methedrone (a drug popular in the UK that's similar to but less potent than crystal meth). He was introduced to it at a party through Grindr. Eventually, he and his then-partner progressed to crystal meth, which quickly escalated from weekend use to daily consumption. While his partner maintained controlled use, Alex's addiction spiraled, especially after their relationship ended.
The turning point came after several dangerous situations, including hospitalizations and near-death experiences. Alex recognized that if he didn't stop, he would either end up dead or in serious trouble with law enforcement. A six-week family trip to Australia provided an opportunity for initial sobriety, though he relapsed briefly upon return. However, this didn't discourage him - instead, he approached his recovery with self-compassion and realism.
Alex found Dallas through TikTok when struggling with post-acute withdrawal, feeling emotionally dull and finding life laborious. Through their work together, Alex learned to question everything, develop boundaries, and find his voice. He worked through patterns of controlling relationships and focused on self-discovery before rushing into dating. A key part of his recovery included developing a meditation practice, which now helps him manage anxiety and sleep better.
The interview highlights how addiction often stems from underlying trauma and self-acceptance issues, particularly in the LGBTQ+ community. Alex's success story demonstrates that recovery is possible with the right support and willingness to do the inner work. The episode concludes with information about Dallas's coaching program, which includes weekly one-on-one sessions over six months and group calls with other men in recovery.
Celebrate with me and these guys who are not only abstinent from crystal meth but living their best and highest life.
Love you all!
Dallas
