Tantra Over Tina: Rediscovering Sex and Intimacy
When Tina spit me out on the other side of active addiction, I felt gutted.
Emotionally, physically, spiritually, mentally, financially, and especially sexually.
I was the husk of the man I was, completely hollowed out as if by a gigantic excavator that carried my identity away.
My entire beingness dumped off the side of a cliff like a pile of dirt.
The great part of the recovery journey is the opportunity to start with that hollow void and refill it the way I choose instead of being the unwilling recipient of the outside world's dumping.
The most difficult part has been rebuilding my sexual void. Crystal meth raped my brain of its natural pathways and replaced them with its own agenda.
I was left feeling as if I was paralyzed from the waist down, traumatized by other men, and confused about what aroused me.
Fast forward two years...
I remember the first spontaneous erection I received post-meth addiction.
Honestly, that recovery milestone was one of my proudest moments. I had worked HARD (no pun intended 😄).
It happened one morning during a particularly intense breathwork session.
In an effort to repair my neural pathways and sexual function, I tried many different routes, including mindful masturbation, kundalini breathwork, sexual energy transmutation, and self-exploratory tantra.
It took me quite a while- consistent daily practice- until my penis would react to something other than pornography.
The morning it happened, it was like I was a teenager again. The ecstasy and natural high of the breathwork intertwined with my sexual energy, and it felt better than any Tina experience.
And that's when my practices got really serious.
Why am I sharing this?

The Five Foundations of Tantra for Recovery
- Direct Experience is King
Direct experience stands as the cornerstone of both Tantric practice and authentic recovery. This principle affirms that your personal truth and journey are inherently valid, regardless of others' opinions or conventional wisdom.
No external authority - whether a religious institution, recovery program, or cultural norm - can fully define your path to healing.
By honoring your direct experience, you develop trust in your inner wisdom and ability to discern what truly serves your recovery.
- Your Body is a Divine Temple
Your body serves as a divine temple, a sacred vessel for your journey through recovery and life.
This foundation emphasizes the importance of treating your physical form with profound respect and care. In recovery, this means maintaining sobriety and nurturing your body through healthy practices, mindful movement, and conscious breathing.
When you honor your body as a temple, you create a strong foundation for both physical and spiritual healing.
- Shakti Energy is the Creative Force
Shakti energy represents the creative and generative force within all beings.
This foundation encourages you to embrace your innate creative energy, which addiction may have suppressed or distorted. By acknowledging and working with this force, you tap into a natural source of vitality and inspiration.
Recovery becomes not just about abstaining from substances but about channeling your energy into creative expression and authentic living.
- Embody Your Innocence
Embodying your innocence involves honoring and healing your inner child - that pure, authentic part of yourself that may have been wounded by trauma or addiction.
This foundation encourages you to release shame around playfulness and joy, recognizing that these qualities are essential to wholeness.
By reconnecting with your natural innocence, you open pathways to deeper healing and genuine self-expression.
- Live an Antimonial Life
Living an antimonial life means choosing what genuinely serves your recovery and growth, even if it differs from conventional paths.
This foundation empowers you to trust your inner wisdom and release others' expectations about how recovery "should" look.
It encourages you to create a recovery practice that aligns with your authentic self, while remaining open to learning from various traditions.
Understanding Kundalini Energy in Recovery
Kundalini energy represents our fundamental life force, the vital energy that drives our creativity, healing, and spiritual growth.
In addiction, this natural force often becomes blocked or distorted, leading to disconnection from our authentic selves and our natural ability to find joy and meaning in life.
The recovery journey involves gently awakening and realigning with this energy through practices like conscious breathing, meditation, and mindful movement. As we heal, this energy naturally begins to flow more freely, supporting our return to wholeness and authentic living.
Working with Kundalini requires patience and respect, allowing this powerful force to awaken gradually as our system becomes ready to handle increased energy and awareness.
Trauma Healing and Authentic Intimacy
Recovery through Tantric principles recognizes the deep connection between sexual energy and emotional healing.
Many individuals in recovery carry trauma that has impacted their ability to form genuine connections and experience authentic intimacy.
Tantric approaches offer a path to healing that honors both the physical and spiritual aspects of intimacy. This healing begins with learning to create safe boundaries and developing trust in oneself before engaging with others.
True intimacy starts with nonsexual touch and authentic emotional connection.
Many people in recovery have never experienced genuine intimacy without the influence of substances.
Learning to be present with another person - through simple touch, eye contact, or shared breathing - can be profoundly healing.
This practice helps rewire the brain's associations with pleasure and connection, creating new pathways for experiencing joy and intimacy in sobriety.
The journey of healing trauma through Tantric practices involves gradually opening to vulnerability in a safe container.
This might include practicing self-compassion, working with a trusted guide or therapist, and slowly building capacity for authentic connection.
The goal is not to erase painful experiences but to integrate them into our whole being while creating new, healthy patterns of relating to ourselves and others.
Recovery through Tantric principles isn't about achieving perfection or following rigid rules.
It's about reconnecting with your authentic self, healing deep wounds, and discovering the natural joy and energy within you.
Take these practices slowly, be patient with yourself, and remember that healing happens in its own time.
Remember the powerful mantra for challenging moments:
"I see it, I know it, I let it go."
Whew, this was a big episode. Soooo rich and deep. This, my friend, is where our sexual healing lies.
